The major transportation priority for the SAMPO area has
been the completion of the Houston-Harte Expressway. TXDOT hosted public meetings in
the 1960s to identify the need for an expressway through San Angelo. The existing
schematic for the Houston-Harte Expressway was approved in 1971 and has subsequently been
reviewed and amended by consultants hired by TXDOT in 1998.
August 2001:
Houston Harte groundbreaking ceremony on August

Rob Junell was instrumental in acquiring funding for the project.
Work will begin in September and the project is expected to be completed
in 2004. Contractors Reece Albert, Inc. and Knight Construction of Big
