Welcome to the San Angelo Metropolitan Planning Organization

The San Angelo Metropolitan Planning Organization (SA-MPO) is a stand-alone transportation planning organization that provides transportation planning services for the City of San Angelo and adjacent areas. SA-MPO is the transportation planning body and consists of federal, state, and local agencies working together to avoid conflicting plans, duplicated projects, or funding conflicts between transportation priorities in the metropolitan area. The San Angelo MPO consists of a Policy Board, ad-hoc committees, and professional planning staff.

Every city with a population of more than 50,000 must have a designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation to qualify for federal highway or transit assistance. In 1973, the Texas Governor designated the City of San Angelo as a metropolitan area. The purpose of MPO’s is to work cooperatively with stakeholders to provide the best transportation plans possible while maintaining a financially constrained budget. SA-MPO coordinates planning activities to guarantee that transportation meets short and long-range needs of the metropolitan area. These planning activities focus on efficient access throughout the area while limiting congestion and pollution problems.

Metropolitan Planning Organizations major work activities to meet specific federal requirements that include the development and maintenance of the Metropolitan Transportation Plan through a continuing, comprehensive, and cooperative planning process. The development of a four-year program for highway and transit improvements. The adoption of a comprehensive one or two year planning program which details the individual transportation planning activities for the area.
