Safe Routes to School 2009

The Safe Routes to School Program is a comprehensive program designed to improve the bicycle and pedestrian safety of school age children. The Program’s objectives are 1) to enable and encourage children in grades K-8, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; 2) to make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age; and 3) to facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools.

Safe Routes to School is a 100 percent federally funded cost-reimbursement program managed through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Traffic Operations Division (TRF). Projects are funded through a statewide competitive process with funds limited to those authorized in the SRTS program. Schools targeted for this 2009 SRTS grant are Belaire Elementary, Fort Concho Elementary, Glenmore Elementary, and San Jacinto Elementary. This project is scheduled to start in Summer 2012.
